Titan Thursday: The Bust of Gillman

I looooooooooooooooooooooooooooove Creature from the Black Lagoon. It is probably one of my favorite movies of all time. Gillman is that perfect combination of animal and misunderstood monster (like Godzilla and Frankenstein’s monster all in one) that gives me all the right emotions. As a biologist, I really appreciate the movie and the evolutionary bits too. I mean… what IS Gillman??? Evolutionarily speaking, he could be an amphibian, a fish, a primate…. It’s madness!

I would love replica of the hand they find at the archaeological dig in the movie… I don’t have that, though. What I do have is this handsome bust in my library (why, yes, that IS a first English edition of War with the Newts he is propping up…).

Handsome devil.

Handsome devil.

Many artists appreciate the good looks of Gillman and have rendered his visage into something worthy of one’s mantel. Today, we appreciate the busts of Gillman. Enjoy.

Here is an especially epic work, where a bust of Gillman is locked in eternal battle with a Predator. The mantel this bust graces must be legendary.

I like the water. It looks like Gillman surprised Predator.

Titan Thursday: Someone made an Otachi plush, and it couldn’t be more AWESOME

I was looking up resin models, and I found THIS. I am an AVID fan of Pacific Rim, and my favorite kaiju (“monster,” for any of you who have been so unlucky as to have not seen the film) has got to be Otachi… or really… the adorable little googly eyed Otachi baby.

Googly goo.

Googly goo.

When I saw that someone made an OTACHI PLUSH, it was a stop the presses moment. We all must revel in the absolute awesomeness and adorableness of this plushy Otachi (with baby!!!) made by “pookat” (Jennifer) at deviantart. I think the only thing that could have made it better (for lack of a better word, because honestly this is the best thing ever) would be to give it a pocket, like those “Puppy Surprise” toys from the 90s, that the baby could be inserted into and popped out of. It may not be as snuggly looking as the Japanese giant salamander plush, but this is amazing.

Titan Thursday: GORGO!!

I would like to take this Thursday to appreciate Gorgo. Gorgo, the British monster movie. Gorgo, the poor little monster that turned out to be a baby stolen from his mother. Gorgo, whose ENORMOUS mother came to rescue him and destroyed most of Britain in the process.

Awwww. Snuggly Gorgo.

Awwww. Snuggly Gorgo.

Gorgo is transported in a quite inconspicuous manner… Looking adorable as he naps through his ordeal.

Apparently there is a Gorgo in there.

Gorgo is one of those monsters that is just too darn cute (but not creepy-cute like Godzuki). I think he looks a bit like an aquatic version of a tuatara.

I think there is a likeness...

Yep, Gorgo is pretty great. As far as monsters go, he is one we can empathize with pretty readily. Really he’s just a big animal that wants snuggles and naps.

GORGO!!

Titan Thursday: Monster Anatomy 101

These are apparently a big thing, you can find a huge number of renditions of monster anatomy on the internet. Being a veterinarian, I find these pure genius. The more classic looking ones are from an art book called An Anatomical Guide to Monsters, from 1967 by Shogo Endo. The more modern monsters are by Brad McGinty. I am a big fan of the classic looking Godzilla. It’s always fun to pull that one out in a power point in the middle of a dry lecture or meeting.

This is my favorite. I need a poster or a t-shirt of this.

Gamera!! Yay! There are several of Gamera (well, of all the monsters), but I like the more classic look of this one.

Titan Thursday: Gamera concept art!

OK, these won’t ALL be concept art, and they won’t ALL be super famous monsters. Just what I started out with to get the ball rolling.

Who doesn’t love Gamera? A giant turtle that flies by propelling himself around with jets. Not to mention he’s super friendly. Always on our side, that Gamera. I don’t like when artists try to make him look all tough, like an alligator snapping turtle or something. He is cute, gosh darn it. Accept his cuteness. And enjoy concept art from Gamera: Guardian of the Universe.

Awwww.

Awwww.

He looks a little insect-ish here.

Gyaos!! Oh No!

So NOT from Guardian of the Universe. But he's so cute, I put it in there anyway.

Titan Thursday: 1954 Godzilla Concept Art!

Adding a new feature this week- on Thursdays, we will feature monsters (some famous, some not-so famous) either from movies or folklore that resemble amphibians, reptiles or invertebrates. This week we’ll start with the big guy, Godzilla (who will likely show up more than once). Godzilla is a much loved beast. A friend of mine was once surprised when they found out I adore Godzilla, supposing that a scientist as myself would find issue with a giant, destructive, plasma breathing reptile. Quite the contrary. I find most herpetologists get a kick out of Godzilla.

I found some awesome original concept art and storyboards from the 1954 film. Enjoy!
