Joanna the Goanna getup

Let’s talk about Joanna the Goanna. Maybe some of you have never seen The Rescuers Down Under (laughable, but possible). Maybe it’s been a while since you saw it and you forgot the best character’s name. Because, really, the character that matters most in that movie… is Joanna the Goanna. Joanna is the side kick who is really rather abused by her evil poacher owner, Percival C. McLeach. I always felt pretty bad for her, honestly. He is super mean to her. I always wanted her to switch sides in the end. But, whatever, she steals the show and totally makes that movie.

Apparently people who like fashion agree. It’s been a thing for a while to make modern outfits on polyvore that represent Disney characters. Of course it started with the princesses, but then went to villains. Side kicks have made it into the mix. Joanna has not one, but FOUR, awesome outfits. And they are amazing. Three of them even feature eggs, which cracks me up (watch the movie, you’ll get it).

Rare Breed: Texas Blind Salamander beer

I was privileged enough to spend a little time with some captive Texas blind salamanders over the weekend, which got me looking around for Texas blind salamander art etc. Texas blind salamanders are delicate little things, but they remind me of one of my favorite species, the cave olm.

There are far too many salamander related beers for me to do one post on just beer, I may have to do them by species… and as far as I can tell, only one beer has ever been devoted to the Texas blind salamander!

Yes, please!

Yes, please!

In 2009, Rahr & Sons Brewery made several beers themed for local endangered species called “Rare Breed” and proceeds went to US Fish and Wildlife efforts for the designated species. The blind salamander brew was a pale ale that, according to one interview, took a bit of effort and time to brew. As far as I can tell, they only made it in 2009 and it has not been made since. I hope they bring it back so I can try it! The label is gorgeous.

Frothy.

Salaman-Santaro

I was looking at salamander pottery when I found THIS:

The cutie holding up the pottery in this video is Salaman-Santaro. I don’t know much about him except that he is the Japanese giant salamander main hero from the iPhone game “SanWars,” in which he must fight the mecha giant salamander in order to save the universe!

SanWars!

Here he is doing what is apparently his trademark dance. And there is a raccoon.

You can find lots more videos of Salaman-Santaro doing random things. Super cute.

Welcome to caudatART!

Hopefully if you have found yourself here, you are a fan of the wonderful, amazing, tailed amphibian members of the order caudata: the salamanders. Or maybe you like art. Or maybe Google decided to send me some readers. However you got here, the salamanders are pleased to have the attention.

If you like:

  • reptiles, amphibians (especially salamanders), or invertebrates
  • science and nature
  • animal inspired art

THIS is the place for you.

CaudatArt will highlight artwork of all forms, and will additionally feature a book of the month.  Hopefully you will  see that animals often underrated can inspire as much awe as the more commonly admired animals.

CaudatArt will also feature a salamander species of the month, having a monthly post containing what are hopefully interesting facts and information on a single salamander species.

Occasional posts will be made about updates and advances in scientific research, but this will not be the focus of the blog.

Pictures will be posted of all sorts of the less ostentatious species and of humans (safely) appreciating them.

Please enjoy, and look forward to the first book of the month and species of the month shortly!
