War with the Newts… the OPERA!

We started this month with the book of the month, my personal favorite book, War with the Newts, so we’ll finish out the month by bringing attention to the fact that there is in existence a War with the Newts OPERA!

Here is a publicity newsreel done for a play adaptation of War with the Newts in Chicago (unfortunately not the opera, totally different performance, but it gets you psyched) :

The original opera was written for the National Theatre in Prague by Vladimir Franz, a Czech composer. It premiered in January of 2013. I really like that the Czech have some national pride for War with the Newts. Pretty great, especially since it is not Capek’s most famed work.

I found some great pictures featuring the newt costumes from the show. In all the pictures I saw from the show, I had no idea what was happening, so I am sure the plot is different from the book. It still looks REALLY cool. Enjoy!

The newts!! They look kinda creepy and great. I love the entire ambiance.

So there's a little kid in the opera version. The newts seem to like him.

Apparently this is the end of the show. Not sure what is going on, but the newts look great.

Salamander Prince

Everyone knows about the frog prince, but what of the salamander prince? This lovely costume is from the ballet The Prince of the Pagodas. In the ballet, the salamander prince woos the heroine and helps her win back her throne from her wicked sister.
